AfD’s Strong Showing in Saxony-Anhalt Elections

2 weeks ago 0

In the regional elections of Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party showed significant strength. However, there remains uncertainty about whether they can establish a far-right state government, marking a significant change since World War II. Exit polls on Sunday suggest a strong lead for AfD.

AfD aimed for an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt’s state legislature, allowing them to govern independently. This would break the ‘firewall’ established by mainstream parties that refuse cooperation with AfD. Achieving this would be a milestone for the party in its 13-year history, amid widespread dissatisfaction with the current national government’s economic performance.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s center-right party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has led the region for 24 years. The AfD’s potential victory represents a symbolic challenge to Merz. Exit polls for ARD and ZDF suggest AfD garnered around 44% of votes, doubling their previous performance. Comparatively, the CDU sees a polling estimate of 18.5%, losing substantial support.

The Left Party secured a third-place finish at approximately 9%. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats and Greens anticipate remaining in the state legislature, each predicted to receive around 8%-9%. The BSW party’s ability to attain the required 5% vote threshold for seats remains uncertain.

Despite the success, AfD falls slightly short of an absolute majority. Ulrich Siegmund, the 35-year-old AfD candidate for state governor, expressed triumph on ARD, declaring that history was made. Voters, he remarked, signaled dissatisfaction with ongoing governance and acknowledged Merz’s role in their success.

Franziska Hoppermann, CDU’s national general secretary, described the results as a very challenging outcome for the party.

AfD holds the position of the largest opposition party in Germany’s national parliament, thriving particularly in the economically weaker eastern regions, such as Saxony-Anhalt.
