Aaron Donald, a future Hall of Fame defensive tackle, has ended his nearly two-and-a-half-year retirement to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams. Reports indicate he agreed to a one-year deal worth $20 million on Sunday.
Speculation about Donald’s return circulated for months. His workouts with the team and communication with head coach Sean McVay fueled these rumors. The prospect of teaming Donald with two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett seemed optimistic at first.
Now, with Donald back, the Rams strengthen their position as Super Bowl favorites for 2026. Other teams have cause for concern as Donald feels confident in his performance.
“Do I feel like I can play at a high level? Yes. Do I feel like I can still be myself? 100%. If I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t be here,” Donald stated during his first practice back with the team. He remained committed to quality training, maintaining rigorous conditioning, football-specific drills, and evaluating his performance. In his words, “If not, it looks a little cleaner to me.”
Though Donald is now 35, his 2023 stats demonstrate his capacity for top-level play. He achieved 53 combined tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, and eight sacks, setting a high standard for defensive tacklers.
Donald’s retirement, occurring while he was still performing excellently, puzzled many. With the Rams’ close calls to victory in his absence, fans speculated what might have happened had he stayed. His return erases such uncertainties.
If Donald’s assessment of his form holds true, with improvements noted, the rest of the NFL faces a formidable challenge.
