The event also featured new awards recognizing bravery during the attempted attack in April. Victor Gonzales, a Secret Service agent, was honored for his actions in confronting an armed suspect, and staff from the Washington Hilton hotel were acknowledged for their professionalism under pressure.

Though the dinner was seen as an opportunity to honor journalism and the free press, some critics felt it should not have been rescheduled. Concerns were raised about the perception of journalists mingling with the individuals they report on. Tensions between the media and the president have been increasing, with Trump actively pressuring media outlets through various means.

Despite the tension, Trump’s closing remarks included an effort to show respect for journalists, although he delivered them with his characteristic bravado. “I have a lot of respect for your profession,” Trump stated, while also noting his own perceived success. His final comment on the evening was more jokingly critical: “I didn’t know what to expect. It’s far worse than I originally thought.”
