A.J. Brown recently found himself facing his former team during joint practices as the New England Patriots hosted the Philadelphia Eagles in training camp. Brown, after a challenging 2025 season with both his performance and the Eagles’ offense, was traded to the Patriots. Philadelphia made the move in exchange for two future draft picks amid signs that Brown’s relationship with Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts had faded.
Over two months have passed since the trade, but Brown’s connection with Hurts remained a topic of discussion. Brown confirmed post-practice on Wednesday that he hasn’t communicated with Hurts since joining the Patriots.
“No,” Brown responded when asked if he had spoken with Hurts since June.
Despite the inquiry, Brown kept his comments about his former Eagles teammates positive.
“Honestly guys, none of that stuff even matters, man. You all should want to report something positive. You know asking the question is going to turn negative,” Brown remarked. “So let’s not get into that. Let’s keep everything positive. It’s love my way.”
Hurts expressed similar sentiments of goodwill.
“I’ve got a lot of love for him and always have,” the Super Bowl LIX MVP shared.
During his time with the Eagles, Brown achieved significant milestones. He set record single-season receiving yardage with 1,496 yards in 2022 and 1,456 yards in 2023. However, Philadelphia’s season ended in January when they were defeated on home ground by the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round.
Brown then requested a change of environment, a move confirmed by Eagles’ general manager Howie Roseman. ESPN sources indicated Brown’s discontent partly arose from his belief that Hurts didn’t target him sufficiently in zone coverage. Social media and public comments also reflected Brown’s frustration regarding his offensive role during the 2025 season.
Despite current team changes, Brown was seen in conversation with former teammates Saquon Barkley and Cooper DeJean during breaks and after practice. On the field, he caught all six passes from Patriots quarterback Drake Maye during drills but missed a catch in a one-on-one against cornerback Quinyon Mitchell.
Brown discussed building his rapport with Maye, acknowledging there are challenges. He praised Maye’s unique approach to the game.
“There’s definitely been some challenges, but he’s very special, and he makes my job a lot easier. Just learning how he sees the game and getting on the same page,” Brown said.
Despite the interaction with the Eagles, Brown didn’t see it as closure. His affection for Philadelphia remains firm, even as he shifts focus to his current team.
“It’s love. I won a Super Bowl ring with them. It will always be love no matter how anyone feels. I love Philly and I will always love Philly but I’m here now,” said Brown. “That’s where my feet are and that’s what I’m focused on.”
The Eagles will kick off their regular season at home against the Washington Commanders on Sept. 13. Meanwhile, the Patriots are set to face the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 9.
