World War II Shell Explodes in Indonesian Village, Causing Fatalities

3 weeks ago 0

A remnant of World War II, suspected to be a shell, exploded beneath a stilt house in an Indonesian fishing village. This tragic incident resulted in the deaths of five individuals and left nearly 20 injured, as confirmed by local police on Monday.

The explosion occurred in the volatile eastern Papua region of Indonesia on a Sunday afternoon. It produced a loud boom, with flames and a thick column of smoke shooting into the sky, as shown on Kompas TV footage. Nine residences were obliterated in the blast.

The source of the explosion is strongly suspected to have been a bomb or mortar left over from World War II, stated Papua police spokesman Cahyo Sukarnito to AFP.

As of the latest updates, three individuals remained missing. Sukarnito mentioned that several body parts had yet to be identified. Meanwhile, at least 19 people were treated for minor injuries.

Work continues on searching for victims and conducting a thorough investigation. Sukarnito said further updates will be provided upon its completion.

This incident is not isolated in Indonesia. Last year, in West Java province, an explosion during the disposal of rejected munitions by Indonesian troops resulted in the deaths of 13 people, including nine civilians.

Indonesia was central to major battles during World War II. At that time, Japanese forces occupied what was then known as the Dutch East Indies, and Allied forces fought to regain control.

In recent years, remnants of World War II bombs have been discovered and have sometimes detonated across the globe. In March, unexploded bombs were defused in various locations, including Dresden, Germany, after mass evacuations. Other incidents reported include an explosion in Poland, bomb discoveries near Paris and in northern England, and a significant detonation at a Japanese airport in 2024.

These ongoing discoveries highlight the lasting impact of wartime activities across continents.
