Victor Wembanyama Reflects on Spurs’ Western Conference Victory and Popovich’s Influence

3 weeks ago 0

Victor Wembanyama found it difficult to articulate his feelings moments after the San Antonio Spurs secured the Western Conference title. They earned a spot in this year’s NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. A question regarding his connection with former coach Gregg Popovich and the impact of this playoff run on the coach’s storied career made Wembanyama pause, clearly moved.

I don’t know what it means for him, Wembanyama expressed. He has more coaching experience than nearly anyone and has navigated countless challenges in his career, and still does as ‘El Jefe.’ He experiences things we can’t even comprehend. I must call him. I need to speak with him because I can’t truly grasp his emotions right now.

Though officially titled President of Spurs Basketball, Popovich, at 77, is often seen as a coach emeritus. He frequently appears at practices in San Antonio and at games, sometimes with a cane. His influence remains inescapable. After the Spurs’ Game 3 loss to Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals, Popovich visited the locker room, offering a mix of motivation and critique, as needed.

When he retired last year following a stroke in November 2024, which effectively ended his coaching career, Popovich still declared his presence. He humorously introduced himself as ‘El Jefe,’ showcasing a shirt bearing that title. Spurs guard Devin Vassell commented on Popovich’s unparalleled coaching legacy, acknowledging his invaluable wisdom shared generously.

The Knicks-Spurs Finals series starts Wednesday in San Antonio. Knicks coach Mike Brown, once an assistant to Popovich, observed his former mentor’s methods over three years in San Antonio. Brown still has relatives in the city, humorously mentioning that this Finals matchup saves him travel costs.

He still has a huge presence. He will always have a presence, Brown remarked. He commended Popovich’s enduring impact on and off the court, respecting the organization for many reasons.

Popovich maintains respect even now. He greeted the Spurs at the airport after their West semifinal series against Minnesota. Following Wembanyama’s ejection in Game 4 for a flagrant elbow, Popovich awaited him as he disembarked. Cameras captured the scene as Popovich addressed Wembanyama.

Later, Popovich welcomed the team home from Oklahoma City in the early hours, where thousands celebrated their victory. As a coach, Popovich guided the Spurs to five NBA championships, starting in 1999 when they defeated the Knicks. Under coach Mitch Johnson, the new era of Spurs basketball sees history repeating, with his first Finals against the Knicks.

I’m fortunate my old boss is still around, and he has lived through this a few times, Johnson acknowledged, benefiting from Popovich’s mentorship.

Following his first substantial victory, Wembanyama could not wait to consult El Jefe. When I speak with him, it remains private unless secretly recorded, Wembanyama quipped. But I need to speak with him urgently.

Wembanyama’s focus remains on gaining more insights and achieving four more wins, understanding that Popovich’s guidance is invaluable on this path.
