The San Antonio Spurs secured their spot in the NBA Finals with a decisive 111-103 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals in Oklahoma City. This victory marks the Spurs’ first return to the NBA Finals since 2014.

Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 22 points. Julian Champagnie added 20 points, mainly from 3-pointers. Support also came from Stephon Castle with 16 points and De’Aaron Fox who contributed 15. Dylan Harper scored 12, while Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell both finished with 11 points each. The team will now face the New York Knicks in the Finals starting Wednesday night.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson reflected on the team’s season, acknowledging their potential for greatness. “Back in October, we knew we had a chance to be pretty good,” he stated, emphasizing their current position at championship level.

A pivotal play occurred in the fourth quarter when San Antonio’s Luke Kornet blocked Isaiah Hartenstein’s fast-break attempt. Although Kornet only played six minutes and scored two points, his block proved to be a turning point.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander stood out with 35 points and nine assists. Despite their efforts, the Thunder were unable to defend their title, marking the eighth straight year of turnover in NBA champions. Other notable Thunder players included Cason Wallace with 17 points and both Jared McCain and Alex Caruso with 12 each.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault highlighted growth through adversity. “You have to grow from every experience, including the tough ones,” he said. Despite leading at various points in previous games, the Thunder struggled to maintain momentum in this crucial matchup.

The Spurs showed resilience, extending their lead in the fourth quarter. The Thunder, already burdened by injuries, couldn’t muster a comeback. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander spoke on the difficulty of repeating a championship win, acknowledging the additional challenges involved.

Out of their 12 encounters this season, San Antonio won eight, but the Game 7 outcome proved to be the decisive factor. Victor Wembanyama expressed the team’s ongoing ambitions, saying, “We want four more. We’re not done.”
