Maine Senate Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Past Issues

4 weeks ago 0

Amy Gertner, wife of Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate, revealed in 2025 that he had sent inappropriate messages to other women. Married since November 2023, Gertner disclosed these texts during the campaign’s vetting process at its start last year. The Wall Street Journal initially reported this revelation.

Gertner expressed that their marriage has become more resilient, stating, “I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t.” Gertner lamented a staffer’s breach of privacy, sharing, “I trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives and I am deeply hurt by her betrayal and the invasion of our privacy.”

Graham Platner, expected to face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the upcoming midterm elections, has faced criticism for past internet comments and a controversial tattoo from his Marine years, later covered up. The Senate race in Maine holds significant weight in determining chamber control post-midterms.

Backed by progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Platner focuses his campaign on populism and his working-class roots. In an interview, Platner attributed past controversial views to PTSD and military service, describing the latter as “a hyper-masculine, hyper-violent place.” His evolving perspective reflects broader life experiences and interactions over the years.
