In Manchester, N.H., Rahm Emanuel highlights the need for ideas to drive the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, not identity politics. The former Chicago mayor and ex-White House chief of staff under President Barack Obama is considering a presidential run in 2028, following term-limited President Donald Trump. Despite the Democratic Party’s emphasis on diversity, Emanuel addresses whether the party will nominate a straight White male.
Emanuel spoke to Fox News Digital, asserting Democrats should probe candidates on how they will ensure the American Dream’s accessibility to future generations.
“Do you have the ideas of how to make sure the American Dream is alive and well, accessible and affordable to another generation?”
After Kamala Harris lost to Trump in the 2024 election, Michelle Obama stated in a podcast that the U.S. still has “a lot of growing up to do” before electing a female president. Joe Biden also attributed Harris’ loss to sexism and racism in an interview on “The View.” Harris was the second female Democratic nominee to lose to Trump after Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Some Democrats suggest nominating a White male in 2028 could be strategic, as an Axios article posited. Emanuel, however, emphasizes voter preferences as crucial.
“More important is the voters’ take. They’ll make a decision,” Emanuel noted.
He participated in “Politics and Eggs,” a New Hampshire Institute of Politics series, and “Stand Up New Hampshire,” engaging with Democratic activists as he considers a presidential bid. Emanuel has traveled to key primary states like Nevada and South Carolina.
Emanuel, aligning with the center-left, advocates for middle-class values, border enforcement, additional police, and education investments to win in 2028. He advises Democrats to avoid getting trapped in cultural debates.
“Get to the core of what they expect from us and don’t get caught up in some cultural cul-de-sac that leads nowhere,” he said.
Expressing his determination, Emanuel humorously claimed, “nobody walked into the ring with Rahm Emanuel who didn’t walk out with a broken nose.” He criticized the Trump administration for its approach to Greenland and Iran strikes.
