NBA Playoffs Reach Game 7 Milestone

4 weeks ago 0

This year’s NBA playoffs have seen an impressive number of series extending to Game 7. On Saturday, San Antonio will face Oklahoma City in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals. This marks the fifth occurrence of Game 7 this season. Previous Game 7s include Philadelphia defeating Boston, Cleveland overcoming Toronto, Detroit beating Orlando, and Cleveland besting Detroit away from home. The five Game 7s this season match the highest number in a single postseason, previously seen in 1994, 2014, and 2016.

Game 7 Road Victories

No NBA season has yet recorded three instances of Game 7 road winners. San Antonio has the opportunity to change this trend. Historically, home teams hold a strong track record in Game 7s, winning 117 out of 159 games.

Oklahoma City and San Antonio Game 7 Histories

Examining their Game 7 records, Oklahoma City and San Antonio have never faced each other in such a contest. Here’s a look at their past performances:

  • Oklahoma City Thunder (since moving): 4-2 overall in Game 7s, 4-0 at home. The Thunder’s home victories have been decisive, with an average winning margin of 17.5 points. Their only losses occurred on the road.
  • San Antonio Spurs: 4-7 overall in Game 7s, 1-5 on the road. Their single road win was against New Orleans in 2008. They haven’t played a Western Conference Finals Game 7 on the road but lost an Eastern Conference Finals Game 7 at Washington in 1979.

Game 7 Birthday Factor

Spurs’ forward, Harrison Barnes, turns 34 on Game 7 day, which could bode well for San Antonio. Historically, players celebrating their birthdays during a Game 7 have emerged victorious. For instance, Paul George celebrated his 36th birthday as Philadelphia won against Boston earlier this season. Barnes has experienced birthday success once before, on May 30, 2016, when his Golden State team defeated Oklahoma City.

Other players who have won on their birthdays include:

  • Pablo Prigoni, who turned 35 on May 17, 2015, contributing to Houston’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
  • Udonis Haslem, whose 32nd birthday on June 9, 2012, coincided with Miami’s triumph over Boston.
  • Kevin Garnett, 28, on May 19, 2004, leading Minnesota past Sacramento.
  • Scott Hastings, 30, on June 3, 1990, in Detroit’s victory over Chicago.
  • Walt Hazzard, 24, on April 15, 1966, in the Los Angeles Lakers’ win against St. Louis.

Season Series Insights

Saturday night marks the 12th meeting between Oklahoma City and San Antonio this season, with San Antonio having the upper hand 7-4 in the previous encounters. This extensive series of matchups mirrors last season’s meetings between Golden State and Houston. Meeting 12 times in a season was last seen in 1994-95 with San Antonio and Houston.

The NBA scheduling model, in place for three decades, usually limits teams to four regular-season meetings. This year’s NBA Cup addition has expanded the potential, possibly allowing as many as 13 meetings between teams. Notably, historical records for frequent matchups remain unbroken, with the Minneapolis Lakers and St. Louis Hawks meeting 20 times in the 1959-60 season, repeating in 1960-61.
