Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of a 25th Grand Slam title has been paused as Brazilian teenager João Fonseca defeated him in a thrilling five-set match at the French Open. On Friday night, Fonseca managed an impressive comeback, overcoming a two-set deficit to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a match that lasted four hours and 53 minutes.
Djokovic, now 39 years old, faced a challenging path at this tournament despite the absence of Carlos Alcaraz due to a wrist injury and Jannik Sinner’s early exit. These circumstances seemingly cleared the way for him to break the Grand Slam record he shares with Margaret Court. Nevertheless, on a sweltering afternoon in Paris with temperatures nearing 90 degrees Fahrenheit, Fonseca, tipped as a future star, managed to become only the second player to defeat Djokovic from two sets down in a Grand Slam event, the first being Jürgen Melzer back in 2010.
Djokovic’s preparation for the tournament was hampered by a shoulder injury limiting his play since March 12. During the match, he displayed signs of physical discomfort, highlighting the toll the contest took on his body as the day turned to night in Paris.
There is still hope for Djokovic with Alcaraz set to miss Wimbledon due to his injury. Jannik Sinner also mentioned needing some recovery time following his second-round defeat.
In the fourth round, Fonseca will face either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul. During the early stages of the match, Djokovic had the upper hand, forcing Fonseca to run and exploiting weaknesses with his strategic shots. Despite a powerful opponent, Djokovic took advantage of his experience and skillful play to gain a two-set lead.
However, Fonseca raised his game, finding the necessary shots needed to challenge Djokovic. As the match progressed into its third hour, Djokovic appeared to struggle physically, particularly at the beginning of the fourth set, hampered by what seemed like cramp and heavy breathing. Remarkably, Djokovic managed to recover temporarily, but Fonseca’s resilience became evident.
Fonseca, with the support of the crowd, managed to draw from his youth and energy, making daring shots and playing out some intense exchanges. After saving several vital points, his strategic play and unwavering tenacity saw him taking the game to a deciding fifth set.
Djokovic’s attempts to regain control saw him break early in the deciding set, only for Fonseca to immediately respond with a break back. Finally, at 6-5, Fonseca managed to break again, utilizing a combination of deft touch and power. Displaying amazing presence of mind, Fonseca served to conclude the match with an ace, capturing an incredible victory.
As discussions turn to Djokovic’s missed opportunity, this victory marks a significant moment for Fonseca, reminiscent of Roger Federer’s breakthrough win against Pete Sampras at Wimbledon in 2001. Previously demonstrating potential with consistent performances against top players, Fonseca’s victory over Djokovic stands out as a significant achievement in his career, indicating a promising future ahead.
