Anne Hathaway shared her experience with a secret medical condition that affected her vision for a decade. During an appearance on The New York Times’ podcast “Popcast,” the 43-year-old actress discussed how cataracts impacted her life.
Living with Vision Impairment
Hathaway explained that she was “legally blind” in her left eye throughout her 30s due to early-onset cataracts. She revealed, “I was half blind for 10 years.” This condition significantly impaired her vision until she underwent surgery at 40.
“It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye,” Hathaway shared. Post-surgery, she realized the extent of her vision loss when she could finally see the full spectrum again. “I’ve calmed down since then,” she said, adding that she was unaware of how taxing it was on her nervous system.
A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s lens. It can cause vision to become cloudy, affecting activities like reading or driving at night.
Hathaway described her restored vision as a “miracle,” appreciating every day the opportunity to see clearly. She reflected on how generations ago, such conditions would not have been as treatable.
Addressing Plastic Surgery Rumors
Recently, Hathaway addressed rumors about her undergoing plastic surgery, expressing her preference to “never comment on anything” but felt the need to clarify due to ongoing speculation.
“We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact,” she stated. The actress emphasized that “the speculation has gotten so loud” compelling her to share her truth.
Hathaway refuted claims of making any significant medical decisions, humorously noting, “It’s just two braids.” Nonetheless, she admitted, “I might still get a facelift someday.”
