NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell paid an emotional tribute to Kyle Busch’s family before the start of the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Addressing Samantha Busch and her children, Brexton and Lennix, he assured them of the NASCAR community’s unwavering support. O’Donnell stated, “Samantha, I want you to know this sport stands with you, and you and your children are part of the NASCAR family forever.” The heartfelt message emphasized the community’s solidarity with the Busch family.
With tears in her eyes, Samantha Busch held her son Brexton, both wearing T-shirts that read “Battle of the Busches.” Kyle Busch’s older brother, Kurt, and his parents also attended the tribute. O’Donnell further remarked, “Kyle Busch is NASCAR; he was one of a kind.” This sentiment was shared across the motorsport community during the Memorial Day weekend, honoring Busch from Indianapolis to Charlotte.
Kyle Busch, who passed away at age 41 due to severe pneumonia that developed into sepsis, was remembered with a moment of silence. Charlotte Motor Speedway displayed a large black No. 8 and Busch’s signature on the grass. The U.S. Army Golden Knights presented his flag, and each car in the race bore Busch’s decal.
The race cars formed a missing man formation during the pace lap, with the public address and TV commentators going silent on the eighth lap. Layne Riggs and Ross Chastain honored Busch with his iconic post-race bow. Fans wore shirts saying “Rowdy” and “KFB,” celebrating Busch’s legacy.
At the Indianapolis 500 earlier, Dale Coyne Racing paid homage by replicating the font of Busch’s No. 18 car. During the opening prayer, Busch was remembered, and his name was displayed on the scoring pylon.
Despite the grandeur of the Indianapolis race, Kyle Busch’s memory loomed large. Katherine Legge remarked on his status as one of the greatest drivers, while Josef Newgarden reflected on the emotional impact of his passing, particularly concerning Busch’s children.
