The regular football season has crossed its midpoint. We’ve already seen significant developments. In Week 5, Providence, one of the remaining unbeaten teams, lost 17-7 to Nazareth. This game was the first since the firing of head coach Tyler Plantz. On the other hand, Oak Lawn and Lincoln-Way East maintained their undefeated status thanks to standout performances from Jayden Schlosser and Jayden Cawthon, respectively.

Postseason Picture Emerges

As the season progresses, the playoff race comes into focus. The expanded playoffs have opened more doors for teams to qualify, even those who haven’t seen postseason action in a while. Leo, with a 3-2 record, is on track for its first playoff appearance since 2013. Similarly, Bloom and Thornton, both at 3-2, are closing in on their first appearances since 2017 and 2019. Marian Catholic, at 2-3, has a key game against winless St. Viator that could clinch its first playoff spot since 2019.

These teams are not merely scraping through; they are solid contenders with potential to reach a 5-4 record, which would have qualified them under the previous system. Currently, all but eight teams from the Southland region seem poised for playoff inclusion. Among those eight, De La Salle, Bremen, Eisenhower, Argo, and Thornridge face challenging paths.

St. Laurence, at 1-4, could secure a playoff berth with strategic wins, including a critical Week 7 game against Marmion. Rich Township, another 1-4 team, hopes to build on its recent 41-0 win over Bloom. Meanwhile, Stagg, without a playoff berth since 2005, needs a win against Thornridge and a significant upset in their remaining games to stand a chance.

Playoff Bye Week Race

As more teams secure playoff spots, attention turns to earning a first-round bye. Typically, achieving seven wins guarantees this advantage, though some six-win teams with substantial opponent victories might also qualify. Lincoln-Way East, Oak Lawn, Mount Carmel, and Morgan Park all have strong odds. Teams like T.F. North and Evergreen Park, each at 4-1, also show promise.

However, for teams like Providence, Lincoln-Way Central, Brother Rice, and Richards, every game matters as they navigate through pivotal matchups that could determine their playoff journeys.

Hillcrest’s 38-20 victory over Lemont was surprising given their 0-3 start and initial struggles to score. Senior quarterback Ladell Ross, previously a receiver, led the resurgence with three touchdown passes. The South Suburban Blue division promises a thrilling, unpredictable season.
