Staten Island Shipyard Explosion: Casualties and Ongoing Investigation

1 month ago 0

On Friday, a tragic incident occurred at a Staten Island shipyard where one person lost their life and over 30 people were injured, predominantly members of the New York City Fire Department. The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. in the basement of a metal structure located at a shipping dock in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood. The explosion happened on Richmond Terrace between Lockman and Andros avenues.

According to officials, a civilian lost their life in the explosion. Additionally, one other civilian was injured alongside at least 34 FDNY personnel, including a fire marshal who sustained critical injuries and a firefighter who was seriously hurt.

“While members were conducting search, rescue, and firefighting operations, an explosion occurred, injuring multiple firefighters operating inside and around the structure,” noted FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito.

All victims were promptly transported to area hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Explosion Under Investigation

FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore reported that first responders faced limited visibility and heavy smoke upon arrival. They received reports of two workers trapped in the basement, complicating rescue efforts.

Confined spaces are very dangerous operations for any rescuers, said Esposito. Firefighters were actively engaged on and around the barge when several were injured.

The fire rapidly escalated to two alarms, and the explosion occurred soon after emergency crews arrived at the scene.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani commented, As the fire grew, first responders did what they always do; they ran towards danger so others could escape to safety.

Residents nearby reported hearing the explosion as they approached the area.

The fire was ultimately brought under control around 7:20 p.m., with more than 200 first responders deployed to manage the situation. Currently, the cause of the fire and explosion remains unknown.

FDNY Members Recovering

The fire marshal sustained head trauma, including a small fracture and brain bleed, and was intubated in the hospital. A firefighter admitted in serious condition was reported to be doing well by Friday evening under observation.

A doctor from Staten Island University Hospital explained the impact of blast energy in confined spaces, noting that fortunately, the firefighters involved did not suffer penetrating injuries or damage to their vital organs.

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella urged the community to support the injured and commended the bravery of the FDNY and EMS teams. Let’s stick together. Let’s keep these folks in our prayers, he stated during a news conference.

Mayor Mamdani visited injured firefighters and their families, expressing gratitude for the responders who risked their lives. Our city owes you a debt of gratitude, he said.

Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed her support for those injured and acknowledged the collaboration between state and city agencies to investigate the cause of the explosion. The identity of the deceased civilian has not been disclosed, and another civilian remains severely injured.
