Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky’s Fourth Congressional District is facing significant opposition from Ed Gallrein, a challenger backed by former President Trump. The race has garnered attention as a test of Trump’s influence within the Republican party.
Mr. Massie, a Republican known for his clashes with President Trump, often refers to these disagreements as badges of honor. He has historically been a lone voice against some of the former president’s policies. Notably, he voted against Trump’s tax legislation, arguing for more frugality, opposed the war in Iran, and criticized aid to Israel as a poor use of taxpayer money. Additionally, he played a key role in pushing for the release of the Epstein files, despite opposition from Trump.
During a public event near the Boone County Courthouse in Burlington, Kentucky, Massie received a piece of Pez candy from a young boy, quipping, “President Trump hands out endorsements like you hand out candy, just not to me.” This comment highlighted Trump’s support for Ed Gallrein, seen as a candidate who aligns more closely with Trump’s vision.
Massie has never faced serious opposition since first taking office in 2012. However, Trump’s determination to replace Massie stems from a history of calling him derogatory names. Trump chose Gallrein, a dairy farmer and retired Navy SEAL captain, as a fitting contender.
As the election approaches, Massie faces one of his toughest challenges yet. While he claims his campaign’s internal polls show the race as a dead heat, public surveys suggest Gallrein may have an edge.
