Pope Leo XIV on Sunday appealed for an end to hostilities in Yemen and prayed for the victims of an attack on Orthodox Christians in Jordan. This marks the pontiff’s gradual return to public duties after lung cancer surgery. He addressed these issues in a message on X.
The Pope expressed concern over the severe humanitarian situation in Yemen, particularly in Taiz, where people face shortages of food, water, and medical care. He made a “heartfelt appeal” for a cessation of hostilities to enable civilians to live in peace. Leo also showed solidarity with Jordanian victims, emphasizing the nation’s tradition of religious coexistence.
These remarks reflect the 71-year-old pontiff’s recent public appearance since undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. Doctors confirmed that no further treatment is needed as testing showed the cancer had not spread. Leo mentioned he is “overcoming this delicate phase” and is easing back into his schedule.
Current Situation in Yemen
Pope Leo highlighted the dire conditions in Taiz, where residents struggle due to shortages in essential supplies. The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has worsened amidst renewed conflict, with over 250,000 displaced since August. This is the highest displacement level since the 2022 truce.
The U.N. reported the Houthis blocked the only supply route from Taiz to Aden, effectively halting humanitarian aid. The restriction has led to soaring commodity prices, leaving numerous residents without basic needs. The blockade also affects access to water and essential goods through the Al-Dhabab route.
Healthcare services face severe pressure. The World Health Organization noted that 42 health facilities in Taiz suffer acute shortages in fuel, oxygen, medicines, and medical supplies, jeopardizing crucial services like emergency surgeries and maternal care.
Reuters reported that families in Taiz ration drinking water, and that fuel shortages hamper pumping and sanitation systems. Garbage accumulation raises fears of disease outbreaks as fighting between the Saudi-backed government and Iran-aligned Houthis disrupts supply routes further.
Jordan Attack and Reaction
Leo also prayed for victims of a deadly attack on Orthodox worshippers in Hamoud, Jordan. He offered condolences to those affected by the incident.
Nine individuals were killed and about 40 wounded during the attack at the Orthodox Church of Saint George. Jordanian authorities labeled it a terrorist act, while Interior Minister Mazin Al Farrayeh stated it was too soon to determine ties to known groups.
Footage aired on Jordan’s Al-Mamlaka television, verified by Reuters, showed gunmen firing at the church. King Abdullah II promised a robust response, stating authorities will take stringent action against threats to the nation. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan attributed the assault to “terrorist ideology and blind extremism.” The hunt for the attackers continues.
Pope Leo addressed the attack during his Sunday Angelus, expressing his prayers and support for the affected community and Jordan, renowned for its religious harmony.
