Henry Miller’s Triumphant Return to the Field

1 hour ago 0

Henry Miller of Marmion Academy has finally found a reason to smile. Over the past two seasons, the senior running back faced numerous setbacks, sidelined by injuries. A fracture and three torn ligaments in his ankle kept him out since Week 3. The previous season ended early with a groin injury, costing him half of his basketball games. Miller admits it was a tough time mentally. He focused on his recovery, hoping to return stronger. His perseverance paid off Saturday afternoon during the Cadets’ Class 4A playoff opener against North Lawndale at Knute Rockne Stadium in Chicago.

Miller, standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 170 pounds, was far from rusty despite a six-week hiatus. He amassed 122 yards and three touchdowns on nine carries, propelling Marmion to a 40-0 victory over the Eagles. “Being healthy through the game is even better than the stats,” Miller expressed with gratitude. “I’m thankful to God and my linemen. Winning the playoff feels great, regardless of the opponent’s strength.” North Lawndale, which had a mere 23 players in uniform, posed little resistance to the Cadets who are preparing for next weekend’s game at Sterling.

Miller’s return was welcomed by senior quarterback Colin McEniry. “Having Henry back rejuvenates our offense and defense, even during practices,” McEniry said. Originally a standout receiver, McEniry stepped in as QB due to an injury just days before the season opener. He continues to adapt. The left-hander completed 7 of 12 passes for 118 yards and scored two touchdowns. “I’m learning daily, gaining comfort and reading defenses more effectively,” he added.

Miller’s football legacy runs deep—his grandfather Gary “Ach” Miller and his father Gary Miller both played the position for Marmion. “Football is my passion,” said Henry, who also participates in track and basketball. Despite setbacks, Miller remains optimistic about college opportunities. He received an NCAA Division III offer from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin. “The challenges have strengthened me mentally, helping me prepare for future endeavors,” Miller noted.

In his first return play, Miller received a handoff from McEniry and sprinted 41 yards to North Lawndale’s 13-yard line, following with a 6-yard run and a 7-yard touchdown. Additional touchdowns were 9 and 40 yards each. Junior receiver Aidan Miller, unrelated to Henry, scored a 41-yard TD reception while senior Ryan Loria secured a 27-yard touchdown catch. Though cleared two weeks earlier by his doctor, Miller’s return was cautious. “The ankle hurt slightly, but once taped and with Advil, it was manageable,” he shared.

Miller excels on both sides, playing strong safety while running back. “His conditioning was slightly impeded,” noted Marmion coach Adam Guerra. “He participated in three-fourths of first-half offensive snaps and a quarter in defense. He’ll be ready for the upcoming game.”
