An Australian federal independent lawmaker, Helen Haines, suffered critical injuries on Monday after being hit by a car in what appears to be a deliberate attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the incident, stating that the driver, who has been arrested, hit Haines in an apparent targeted attack.
The incident occurred outside Haines’ district office in Wangaratta, Victoria. The 65-year-old was struck by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV. Authorities have detained the 43-year-old driver, who was promptly apprehended by a bystander at the scene.
The national counterterrorism team, including police and intelligence agencies, is investigating the matter. A police report revealed that a knife was seized from the SUV, though the intent behind the attack remains under investigation.
Haines first entered Parliament in 2019. Following the attack, she was transported to a hospital where she is currently receiving treatment for her critical injuries.
The event has intensified discussions about the safety of Australian lawmakers. Traditionally, politicians in Australia have been accessible to the public, often without security details. However, threats against officials have been on the rise, doubling over the past three years according to Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke noted over 1,000 threats were recorded against politicians in the financial year 2025-2026.
Prime Minister Albanese expressed concerns about the increasing hostility in political discourse. He noted that heightened tensions have already prompted security changes for lawmakers. Albanese attributed part of the rise in hostility to social media influences.
In comparison, the UK has heightened security for its politicians following attacks. British Labour lawmaker Jo Cox was killed by a far-right extremist in 2016, and Conservative David Amess was similarly attacked in 2021. Former politician Ann Widdecombe was recently murdered, with charges filed for murder and terrorism.
