On Monday, President Trump signed an executive order to set up a new women’s health division within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a White House Women’s Health Task Force. This event took place in the Rose Garden, with First Lady Melania Trump present.
The executive order aims to achieve five key objectives:
- Direct research funding towards cures for illnesses that disproportionately impact women.
- Leverage artificial intelligence to expedite medical discoveries.
- Accelerate the development of new therapeutics for women.
- Offer medical breakthroughs to women at more affordable prices.
- Make discussions on women’s health less stigmatized.
“This is a transformative moment for women in America,” First Lady Melania Trump stated. “Today marks a new era for women’s health. We will fight to discover the cures that ensure women can live healthier and fuller lives.”
President Trump acknowledged that the concept for a women’s health division within NIH was initiated by the First Lady. Though First Lady Melania Trump also signed the executive order, her signature holds no legal authority.
“Think of it, a women’s health division,” President Trump remarked. “Who wouldn’t want that? Melania pointed out, ‘They don’t have it.'”
The President hinted that Americans will soon learn about the “incredible things” being done to provide women with the healthcare they require. Details on funding allocation or how the initiatives will be implemented remain unspecified.
The announcement follows White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles’ personal battle with breast cancer. Despite her diagnosis in March, Wiles continued in her role and announced she was cancer-free in September.
“As many of you know,” President Trump said, “Susie recently overcame breast cancer, a tough opponent. She’s a tremendous fighter and, like our First Lady, she cares about enhancing the health of women in America.”
White House spokesperson Allison Schuster stated that the task force will aim to bridge critical research gaps and enhance women’s healthcare throughout different stages of life, focusing on prevalent health issues.
