Princess Diana feared that Prince Harry might struggle to find his place within the royal family, particularly in the shadow of his older brother, Prince William, the future king. This concern is highlighted as interest grows around the new documentary “Diana Unheard,” which contains never-before-heard audio recordings of Diana discussing her family and royal life.
The recordings, used in Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography “Diana: Her True Story,” reveal Diana’s candid thoughts on the royal succession, her sons, and her marriage to then-Prince Charles. Royal expert Christopher Andersen suggests these recordings may further highlight Diana’s worries about the different paths facing her sons.
Diana worried from the beginning that Harry might wither in the shadow of his brother the future king, Andersen said.
In a final conversation with her son William, he expressed concern about a photo opportunity at Eton that might make Harry feel left out. Diana had long been concerned that Harry might develop insecurity and self-doubt due to his role as the “spare” in the family.
Diana trusted that William would successfully assume his future responsibilities, while worrying about how these dynamics might affect Harry. Royal expert Kinsey Schofield noted Diana’s fear lay more in William’s burdens than Harry’s auxiliary role.
Schofield said Diana understood their different destinies: William was born to be king, and Harry to support him. Diana emphasized the importance of William having a trusted partner. While Harry had unique opportunities, he could pursue interests independently and engage in charitable efforts.
Despite his popularity and public success, Harry’s position as second in line didn’t guarantee failure. He enjoyed a celebrated military career and founded the Invictus Games.
The current estrangement between the brothers would have greatly upset Diana. Their shared grief from losing their mother should have united them. Reports of tension emerged in 2018 and worsened after Harry and Meghan Markle left their royal roles in 2020, coupled with their media revelations.
Hilary Fordwich cautioned against interpreting Diana’s past concerns through the lens of recent events, as recordings from 1991 don’t predict current outcomes.
Although Diana was known for her independence, she upheld her public duties. Andersen and Schofield suggest she wouldn’t have approved Harry’s departure from royal responsibilities.
Diana understood what it meant to feel trapped but Harry had choices Diana never enjoyed, Schofield remarked.
Diana’s main wish was for her sons’ happiness and closeness. She hoped for them to become compassionate men aware of their responsibilities.
