Christina Applegate Faces Misdiagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis

2 hours ago 0

Actress Christina Applegate recently revealed a medical misdiagnosis regarding her condition. Initially diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), she shared now being “back at square one”. On her podcast ‘MeSsy’, which she co-hosts with Jamie Lynn Sigler, Applegate discussed her doctor’s surprising news: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.”

Despite others being pleased by the news, Applegate expressed her disappointment and confusion. She had paused her podcast to come to terms with the unexpected update. During a two-part episode, she mentioned feeling worse, stating, “I haven’t gotten better. If anything, I’ve gotten worse.” She awaits further investigations by her doctors to understand her ongoing symptoms since 2021.

In previous years, Applegate had publicly shared living with MS since a diagnosis five years ago. She made infrequent public appearances, such as the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2023 and described these events as her possible final appearances as an actor.

Dr. Marwa Kaisey from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center noted that MS misdiagnosis occurs in about 20% of patients, emphasizing the complexity of diagnosing MS without a definitive test.

Multiple sclerosis attacks the protective nerve coverings, leading to severe symptoms, including potential loss of mobility. The disease remains incurable, with patients experiencing varied effects, such as remission periods where symptoms temporarily subside.

Applegate and Sigler, both public figures with MS experiences, have been noted as “poster children of MS”. Applegate described her recent emotional turmoil, saying, “I had a reason… why my day sucked every day. And now I don’t have a reason, and it’s very unnerving.” She also reflected on her struggles, including the use of wheelchairs and difficulty walking.

The uncertainty about her health continues to be daunting for Applegate. Despite her dramatic diagnosis reversal, her life remains unchanged and challenging.

This story is ongoing, and updates will follow as new information comes to light.
