Christina Applegate recently discovered she does not have multiple sclerosis (MS), challenging her previous diagnosis from 2021. Speaking on her podcast, “MeSsy,” with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the 54-year-old actress shared her mixed emotions about this unexpected development.
“This may come as great news, but to me, I’m back at square one,” Applegate said, struggling with her feelings. She recalled her doctor delivering the news: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.”
I was not happy at all,” Applegate admitted. “Everybody else was so happy … You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better.”
According to Applegate, her condition has not improved, and some symptoms have worsened. Her medical team is investigating the cause of her ongoing health issues and why she was initially diagnosed with MS.
The actress highlighted the high occurrence of MS misdiagnoses, noting, “There’s a pretty high number of misdiagnoses with MS.” She expressed confusion and a sense of having let people down.
Applegate revealed her role as a public figure connected to MS: “I became this — you and I, the poster children for MS.” She conveyed the loss of a clear reason for her daily struggles, adding to the confusion and emotional toll.
Chronic pain and mobility challenges have deeply affected Applegate’s mental health and career. She shared, “I’ve gone through a great depression because of this … I lost my job.” She clarified that despite the change in diagnosis, her physical limitations remain.
I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office,” she noted. “Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’
Applegate’s initial announcement of her MS diagnosis came in 2021 on social media. She expressed gratitude for the support from others living with the condition.
The actress has openly discussed the impact on her family life, especially her relationship with her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble. Applegate expressed a strong desire to participate in Sadie’s daily activities despite her condition’s challenges. “It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” she shared.
Applegate emphasized her commitment to honesty regarding her life’s difficulties. “My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow,” she said. She acknowledged the emotional impact of her health journey on her daughter, as Sadie adjusts to her mother’s limitations.
