Texas Longhorns Face Tough Path After Unexpected Losses

46 minutes ago 0

Texas experienced another tough defeat over the weekend, losing 27-24 at home to an unranked Florida team. After a strong start to the season with a 4-0 record, including a significant victory against former No. 1 Ohio State, Texas has now suffered back-to-back close losses. The first setback came at the hands of Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, followed by the recent loss to Florida.

The Florida loss is particularly damaging because the Gators were without their starting quarterback and top wide receiver. Arch Manning once again emerged as a central figure in Texas’ struggles, completing 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown. However, a late fumble by Manning ended any hope of a comeback. This defeat has severely impacted Texas’ prospects for making the College Football Playoff (CFP). According to Polymarket, their chances have plummeted to 36%, down from over 70% before the Florida game.

Earlier in the season, the Longhorns’ strong performances included wins over Ohio State and then-No. 14 Tennessee, along with decisive victories against Texas State and UTSA. The recent losses have proved costly, leaving Texas with a 4-2 overall record and a 1-2 record in SEC play. As a result, their AP Top 25 ranking has dropped to No. 19 after having peaked at the No. 1 spot. Losing two games might not seem catastrophic, but falling to unranked conference teams poses a significant challenge for coach Steve Sarkisian and the team.

Their future path appears difficult, with little room for mistakes. They are set to host No. 7 Ole Miss, a 5-1 team coming off consecutive victories. Following that, Texas faces Mississippi State and Missouri on the road, then encounters LSU, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. Five out of their last six games are against SEC teams with winning records, with three contests on the road.

Given that even a single additional loss could end their season, the Florida game stands out as particularly damaging. Missing the 12-team playoff could have significant consequences. Already under pressure, Sarkisian and Manning were expected to excel due to the talent on their roster. Failing to bounce back from these consecutive losses and making it to the CFP would be a difficult setback for the Texas program.
