The tragic death of ex-NFL athlete Kevin Johnson has brought attention to a worrying pattern of violence in the Los Angeles County region, specifically targeting homeless populations. Officials revealed on Tuesday that this incident may be linked to three other unresolved murders in the same vicinity.
Kevin Johnson, aged 55, was discovered dead on January 21 at a temporary living site in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles. According to the sheriff’s department, he was found with what they referred to as “head trauma.” Emergency paramedics pronounced Johnson dead at the location.
The sheriff’s department has emphasized that these killings of individuals without permanent homes have all occurred near East 120th Street, a border of the Willowbrook community, spanning from October to January. “All four victims were unhoused individuals living in encampments,” it stated. “Homicide investigators are actively seeking any leads and are committed to finding those responsible for the crimes.”
Collaborative efforts between detectives and outreach workers who assist the homeless are ongoing in the investigation. Authorities urge anyone with pertinent information to step forward.

The county medical examiner’s report has indicated Johnson’s cause of death was due to “blunt head trauma and stab wounds.” Investigations point to his living situation in the encampment, as disclosed by the sheriff’s office last month.
Additionally, the department reported another homicide on January 26 at a similar location, described as a riverbed area along 120th Street. According to statements, deputies arrived there following reports of another deceased individual during the early hours of the morning. Emergency services also confirmed the victim’s death on-site, with investigations ongoing.
Details regarding the timing and precise locations of the other two murders are still unclear. Kevin Johnson was known for his role as a defensive player in the 1990s with teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles and the then-Oakland Raiders. Attempts to reach out to his family for comments on Tuesday night were unsuccessful.
In a heartfelt statement reported by KTTV-TV in Los Angeles, Brendan Johnson, the son of the former NFL player, described his father as “loving, caring, and truly joyful.” He further expressed that “My dad was selfless, loyal, and deeply cherished. His absence leaves a huge void, but his love, laughter, and spirit will live on through everyone whose life he touched.”
Friends of Johnson previously informed KABC-TV of their belief that he may have been afflicted with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition linked to repeated head injuries.
Willowbrook, notable for hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital, is located just south of the city of Los Angeles and the Watts neighborhood. A county flood control channel map identifies the waterway crossing near 120th Street and Elva Avenue as Compton Creek.
