Kevin Kisner Criticizes Rory McIlroy’s Intentions in India Golf Event

Kevin Kisner, a four-time PGA Tour winner, has criticized Rory McIlroy for allegedly being insincere about his motives for participating in the DP World Tour event in India. McIlroy, however, has responded to these allegations.

In the run-up to the DP World India Championship, McIlroy attended the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi and expressed his hope to promote golf in India by playing in the event. Kisner, skeptical of McIlroy’s motives, has accused him of participating purely for a substantial appearance fee.

Kisner stated on the Fore Play podcast, “That is such a dog sh-t comment, but I guess for the right price, we could all say that comment. He doesn’t want to globally expand in India; he wants to get his 10 million bucks and go play in India.”

He further remarked, “They always seem to say the right things while they’re over there. As part of your appearance fee, here’s your script for altruism, and you need to mention these four lines in whatever interview you do throughout the week.” Kisner found humor in the situation, noting the oddity of players choosing certain events over others based on their appearance fees.

McIlroy, who finished T-42 in the India event, addressed Kisner’s comments after the final round on Sunday. He candidly shared, “I didn’t see that. I don’t know why me being in India would make Kis need to comment on that.” He elaborated that players can both earn money while genuinely trying to promote the sport. McIlroy noted, “It’s a huge market for golf,” referring to India’s large middle class.

Both golfers have acknowledged the role of appearance fees in their decisions, with McIlroy explaining his participation was part of his interest in broadening the sport’s reach.
