Pressure Mounts on Israel Over Settler Violence

6 hours ago 0

Mike Huckabee, former ambassador to Israel under President Donald Trump, has demanded strict measures against those responsible for attacking American journalist Heidi Levine in the West Bank. His statement follows U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s call for action against settler violence, adding pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

Huckabee condemned the attack on Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine as a ‘despicable act of terror.’ He demanded arrest and prosecution for the attackers. Levine suffered serious injuries while covering Palestinian farmers near Ramallah. Attackers stole her equipment and personal belongings.

Rubio stated that the U.S. expects Israel to prevent future incidents, seeking clarification from Israeli officials and urging action. The U.S. State Department condemned violence from any party involved in the incident.

Israeli police have launched an investigation, but Netanyahu speculated other parties might be responsible despite prevailing reports identifying Israeli settlers.

Huckabee, typically a strong advocate for Israel, has condemned similar acts previously, including a siege on Palestinian homes in Qusra. His recent statements underline ongoing efforts to address violence against Americans in the region.

Rubio’s statements hold diplomatic significance, representing official U.S. criticism and demand for action against settler violence.

The issue draws renewed global attention with more attacks recorded. Yesh Din, an Israeli monitoring group, reported 170 incidents since September, coinciding with the olive harvesting season. European diplomats have also faced threats in Taybeh village.

Congressional Democrats led by Chuck Schumer have pressured Netanyahu to address the situation, urging investigations and accountability for violence, including past incidents involving U.S. citizens.

While the Trump administration opposes territorial annexation, it maintains general support for Israel. Whether current pressure results in significant actions remains uncertain.
