Chicago Bulls’ Preseason Offers Insights for the Upcoming Season

58 minutes ago 0

The Chicago Bulls completed their preseason schedule with three wins out of five games, concluding with a 133-116 victory against a depleted Minnesota Timberwolves team. While preseason outcomes may not be crucial, the games provided valuable insights into the Bulls’ approach before their season opener against the Toronto Raptors.

Testing Rotations Amid Challenges

New coach Tiago Splitter aimed to experiment with full rotations in the final preseason games. However, both the Milwaukee Bucks and the Minnesota Timberwolves rested their starters, complicating his plans. Despite this, Splitter was able to explore various rotation combinations within a deep roster that the team intends to develop over time.

Wilson Ready to Contribute

Caleb Wilson emerged as a key player during the preseason. Despite being only 20, Wilson displayed confidence, successfully making shots from the three-point line and executing impressive dunks. He also recognized areas for improvement, such as better decision-making when not on the ball. Wilson knows how to use his strengths and acknowledges his need to grow. His readiness to handle challenges and learn from setbacks will be crucial for his first NBA season.

Wilson commented, “It’s never felt too much. Great players have challenging starts, and my beginning isn’t rough. I’m learning every time I play. I’m facing new competition and expectations. Mistakes are part of the process, and I need to allow myself the chance to grow and play.”

Starting Rotations and Player Roles

The starting lineup appears set with Josh Giddey, Wilson, Matas Buzelis, Norman Powell, and Nic Claxton. Injuries led to Tobe Awaka and Jalen Smith filling in for Claxton. This adaptation might extend to the season opener, as Claxton is unlikely to play. The backups include Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Buddy Hield, and Isaac Okoro, with Splitter comfortable using up to 11 players in rotation. Leonard Miller also earned a prominent spot, competing for backup minutes with Patrick Williams and Noa Essengue.

Leonard Miller’s Impressive Performance

Leonard Miller continued his strong play from last season, shooting 62% during the preseason. His unique style, which includes adept passing and shooting, along with his unconventional form, has consistently outperformed peers in the 4 position. At 22, Miller’s development is a focus, and his distinctive skills could significantly benefit the team, especially in rebuilding.

Jalen Smith’s Crucial Role

With the Bulls facing roster challenges in the frontcourt, Jalen Smith’s role becomes increasingly critical. Injuries to Nic Claxton and Zach Collins increase Smith’s importance as a versatile big man. Collins’ history of limited play underscores the need for Smith to be available to cover the court effectively on both ends.

Opportunity Knocks for Young Players

Preseason allowed increased playtime for younger players, as veterans rested. Coach Splitter intentionally assigned responsibilities to the younger roster members, including Dailyn Swain and Noa Essengue, who are seen as long-term prospects. Swain’s decision-making showed improvement, and Essengue quietly enhanced his defensive skills. Both players will need to capitalize on limited NBA game opportunities to further their growth.
