Michael Tubbs, former Mayor of Stockton, California, is leading efforts to promote no-strings-attached cash payments through Mayors for a Guaranteed Income. This initiative aims to combat high living costs across the U.S. Tubbs stated in a Fox News Digital interview that federal intervention is necessary to provide immediate relief.
A video from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income emphasizes that direct cash payments can quickly address affordability issues. Tubbs argues traditional economic strategies often neglect immediate needs, while cash payments offer rapid assistance.
This year, half of U.S. states have introduced legislation around guaranteed income, showing growing state interest. Tubbs pushes for national support to make these programs widespread.
“I believe this needs to become a federal intervention,” Tubbs told Fox News Digital.
Americans face rising costs in living, healthcare, and gas. Tubbs notes long-term solutions like affordable housing are crucial, but people require prompt support now.
Recently, Alameda, California celebrated the completion of the “Rise Up Alameda” guaranteed income pilot with a 24-month evaluation report. The city allocated $4.6 million from federal rescue funds, supporting 150 low-income households monthly.
Alameda Mayor Marilyn Ezzy Ashcraft praised the program’s role in achieving financial stability for vulnerable residents.
According to official statements, Alameda’s pilot aims to reduce economic instability, shift perceptions on poverty, and contribute to national policy discussions.
Former Stockton Mayor Tubbs highlights more than 30 studies supporting guaranteed income. He insists sharing recipient stories is key alongside data to convey the real impacts of these programs.
Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, including over 150 mayors, supports local pilot programs since its 2020 launch. Cook County, Illinois, has added guaranteed payments permanently to its budget after a successful trial.
Despite local initiatives, funding challenges persist as federal pandemic relief deadlines approach. Further, some Republican-led states have prohibited guaranteed income programs, arguing they discourage work and misuse funds.
Conversely, Democratic leaders have vetoed similar bans, supporting continued local initiatives.
Evanston, Illinois, recently expanded its program using remaining federal aid. Several states have implemented bans on these programs, while others are challenging them in courts.
