A YouTuber has significantly shaken up the film industry with a self-financed, self-distributed sci-fi horror movie that has earned unexpected success at the box office. ‘Iron Lung,’ a film adaptation of an indie video game led by Mark Fischbach, more commonly recognized as Markiplier, grossed an impressive $18.19 million domestically during its opening weekend, according to final data from Comscore.
This figure is more than six times its modest $3 million budget, demonstrating a striking return on investment. The film, both written and directed by Fischbach, was screened in 3,015 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. It was narrowly outranked by ‘Send Help,’ a horror-thriller directed by Sam Raimi, which led the box office by collecting $19.1 million domestically. It also outperformed Amazon MGM Studios’ ‘Melania: Twenty Days to History,’ a documentary on the first lady, which was released in over 1,500 theaters in North America.
The trend of digital content creators transitioning into traditional forms of entertainment is growing. Personalities like Addison Rae and MrBeast have made forays into film, TV, and music, leveraging their vast online followings. Fischbach, with over 38 million subscribers on YouTube, has nurtured a substantial brand centered around gaming walkthroughs and commentary videos since 2012.
Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends at Comscore, noted the remarkable transition of creators from YouTube success to significant platforms such as television and cinema. ‘You never know where the next big hit is going to come from,’ he observed.
“To see really savvy creators and influencers … parlay their small-screen YouTube success either onto traditional television or onto the big screen is remarkable, and I think we’re going to see more of it.”
The narrative of ‘Iron Lung’ comes from a 2022 sci-fi horror game of the same name. It takes place in a dystopian future, following the character Simon, a convict who must navigate a submarine through an ocean of blood on a distant moon after a cataclysmic event causes planets and star systems to disappear. Fischbach stars as Simon, with fellow YouTuber Seán William McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, who also played the original game, featuring in the cast.
The game’s creator, David Szymanski, expressed astonishment at the film’s triumph, tweeting ‘What the f—.’ On a YouTube livestream, Fischbach became emotional upon reviewing the box office numbers, calling the experience a ‘hero moment’ that validates the potential of indie filmmaking.
“And maybe if that could inspire someone to keep making films, that’d be pretty cool,” he said, composing himself through tears. “And maybe if it could open up a door for other people to do their projects independently and know that there could be success in it, I think that’d be pretty cool.”
Fischbach’s background includes producing YouTube Original feature films such as ‘A Heist with Markiplier’ (2019) and ‘In Space with Markiplier’ (2022), showcasing his willingness to explore beyond digital content creation into professional filmmaking.
The success of ‘Iron Lung’ illustrates how streaming and theatrical releases can co-exist harmoniously, as noted by Dergarabedian. While streaming offers myriad conveniences, there’s an unparalleled experience provided by viewing a film on the big screen.
The movie’s surprise box office success has sparked discussions on the potential for digital creators to break into mainstream filmmaking. An X user stated Fischbach ‘has opened doors for other YouTubers/content creators to be taken seriously within the film world,’ prompting the industry to pay attention.
Tuesday saw YouTube CEO Neal Mohan commend Fischbach’s achievement, labeling it evidence of a ‘new era of Hollywood.’
Despite its relatively low budget and limited marketing efforts, the movie’s timing and genre also played pivotal roles in its achievement. Following a quiet January for theaters and owing to the strong interest in the horror genre, ‘Iron Lung’ found fertile ground for its debut.
Dergarabedian observed that this film might well serve as a prototype for others who are pursuing self-financed cinematic projects. He emphasized that typically, movies undergo extensive marketing campaigns to build up their presence before premiering, yet this approach is rewriting the existing norms.
