Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts won’t play in Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers. He is receiving treatment for a superficial blood clot in his calf. This condition has been monitored by medical staff for nearly a week.
The Eagles issued a statement regarding Hurts, stating he sought treatment after practice on Thursday, October 8. He explained the injury occurred when he was cleated during the match against the Rams on October 4. Despite practicing fully on both Wednesday and Thursday, he underwent his first treatment session for the calf injury on Thursday.
Hurts continued to receive treatment and practiced fully on Friday. His name was added to the practice report. Following the team’s flight to London, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday. The test revealed a superficial blood clot. Medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the ultrasound. They agreed that activity and mobility were crucial and indicated Hurts could safely participate in the game.
Although Hurts played without limitations on Sunday, and continued treatment on Monday and Tuesday, a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday night showed movement in the blood clot. Consequently, Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Panthers as medical staff determine the best treatment plan.
Blood clots pose significant health risks. They can block blood flow to essential organs, leading to pulmonary embolism, stroke, or heart attack. The Eagles’ communication with the league office demonstrates the potential severity of Hurts’ condition.
As Hurts is sidelined for Week 6, Tanner McKee, a third-year veteran, will step in as the starter against the Panthers. McKee has previously started two games in his career. Under his lead, the team has experienced both a loss and a victory.
