2 hours ago 0

Series of Deaths Raise Safety Concerns

A potential serial killer may be targeting individuals along a popular river trail near Michigan State University, sparking significant safety concerns. The Lansing Police Department is investigating five deaths linked to the Lansing River Trail over the past year. Authorities believe a suspect may be attacking people at night.

Challenges in Investigation

Criminologist Dr. David Hayes highlighted the complexity of solving such crimes. Unhoused individuals often lack the digital and physical traces, like cell phone data and consistent routines, which can make connecting cases difficult. He pointed out the tragic potential of a killer preying on vulnerable people.

University Measures for Student Safety

The Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety has urged students to remain vigilant, particularly at night. They have enhanced security measures on the MSU portion of the trail with additional LED lighting, Green Light emergency phones, public safety cameras, and bike patrols by MSU Police Officers.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson reaffirmed their commitment to student safety, advising reasonable precautions to ensure security.

Recent Victims and Investigation Progress

One of the recent victims, Daniel Lusk, 22, was found fatally stabbed under the East Michigan Avenue bridge on August 20. This location is less than a mile from the Michigan State University campus, where students frequently commute along the Red Cedar River.

Police have arrested Edward Joseph Smith, 23, in connection with Lusk’s stabbing. However, Smith is not accused of involvement in the other four deaths.

Official Statements and Public Reassurance

Lansing Mayor Andy Schor stated that downtown Lansing and the river trail remain safe for residents and visitors. He emphasized that the Lansing Police Department has increased presence downtown and along the river trail at all times.

Lansing Police Chief Rob Backus addressed the community in a press conference, detailing the ongoing investigation. He noted that all victims were homeless White men.

Active Investigation

The investigation into these deaths remains active. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and bring any perpetrators to justice.
