The state should prioritize increasing funding for psychiatric hospitals to ensure better care and facilities for mental health patients. Recent events underscore this necessity.
In April, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital settled a significant investigation by paying $500,000 to the state. This inquiry, which spanned several years, scrutinized the hospital’s treatment of psychiatric patients. Attorney General Letitia James criticized the hospital system for recurring failures.
Key issues highlighted during the investigation included the failure to reinstate psychiatric beds that were removed during the pandemic. The hospital also struggled to adequately screen and stabilize patients in emergency situations. Additionally, there were instances of not accepting ambulances with incoming patients.
These problems highlight the urgent need for improved funding and oversight in psychiatric healthcare. The state’s intervention is necessary to address and rectify these systemic issues within psychiatric facilities.
