Lakers Move Into New Era with Luka Doncic at the Helm

1 hour ago 0

The Los Angeles Lakers have embarked on a significant transition, ushering in a new era centered around Luka Doncic. Early indications from training camp suggest that the team has identified crucial elements needed to support its star player: defense.

For the first time since the 2017-18 season, the Lakers will start a season without LeBron James on their squad. His departure allowed the Lakers to rethink a roster long tailored to his strengths. Instead of pursuing another superstar to fill James’ shoes, Los Angeles focused on surrounding Doncic and Austin Reaves with players ready to excel in both offensive and defensive roles.

Just two training sessions into the camp, the Lakers’ revamped defensive approach is evident. Reaves highlighted the defensive prowess of Matisse Thybulle, Ziaire Williams, and Adou Thiero. Additionally, the presence of the 7-foot-2 center, Walker Kessler, fortifying the rim, made scoring a formidable challenge.

“Let me tell you, trying to score on Matisse and Ziaire, especially with Adou out there too, and then Walker on the back line, is not easy,” Reaves shared with the media. “I had to deal with that all day yesterday and today, and it’s not fun.”

Reaves emphasizes that these new defensive assets could be pivotal in the Lakers’ pursuit of an NBA championship.

“Defensively, we’re gonna be much better,” he stated. “Those guys compete every possession, and everyone else fills their roles effectively. I see just how special we can become.”

These encouraging comments hint at a positive shift for Lakers fans eager to believe in the restructured team. Doncic now stands as the franchise’s unique centerpiece. His time with the Lakers has been successful, leading them to 53 wins, securing his second NBA scoring title, and earning first-team All-NBA honors. Yet, strengthening Doncic’s potential requires more than offensive capabilities.

The Lakers placed 20th in defensive rating last season, tied for 22nd in blocked shots, and struggled in rebounding. To address these issues, defense and size were prioritized in the offseason.

The front office made bold moves by acquiring Kessler via a sign-and-trade with the Utah Jazz and adding perimeter defenders like Thybulle and Quentin Grimes. Williams also joined the lineup, providing head coach JJ Redick with ample defensive options around Doncic and Reaves.

Kessler is considered a significant acquisition due to his prowess as one of the NBA’s elite rim protectors. He ranked among the top five in blocked shots across his initial three seasons. His presence is poised to empower Los Angeles’ perimeter defenders to adopt more aggressive approaches, knowing reliable support is available.

“Listen, I think we’re going to be a nasty defensive team,” Kessler commented, emphasizing the strength of their perimeter defense. “I think people aren’t taking into account how good our perimeter defense is going to be.”

With these enhancements, Doncic’s load remains unaffected while gaining defensive and rebounding support. Kessler emphasizes the relationship between perimeter defense and his role, “Having those guys that can steal the ball … and when they do get beat, be able to recover, it makes my job a lot easier. It’s a lot easier to block a shot when a dude has someone on his hip instead of an open lane toward the basket.”

The intensified defensive energy is clear from early practices. Redick noted that physicality in practice led to adjustments in their sessions. Thybulle made an impact by securing at least seven steals across the initial two days.

No predictions can yet be made about the Lakers evolving into a top-tier defensive team. While progress during training camp is promising, successfully defending against elite Western Conference teams over an 82-game season remains a distinct challenge.

However, with the lineup focused on maximizing Doncic’s talents, both offensively with strategic shooting support and defensively through strong support networks, the Lakers are progressing. The elements are in place to potentially fulfill the team’s aspirations, and Reaves already acknowledges the emerging potential. With this foundation set, Los Angeles might have established the framework Doncic needs to guide the organization into its next chapter.
