Senator Collins Unfazed by Vandalism Incident Amidst Senate Race

58 minutes ago 0

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine stated her resolve not to be “intimidated” following the vandalism of one of her constituent offices. On Monday, Collins’ office in Biddeford was defaced with the words “Trump Whore” sprayed on the doors. This was confirmed by her office, and images of the damage were shared online by Maine state Senator Matt Harrington, the assistant Republican leader.

Investigation Underway

The Biddeford Police Department has confirmed an investigation into the vandalism incident. Collins’ Chief of Staff, Katie Brown, affirmed the commitment of the senator and her staff to continue serving Maine residents despite the attack. “Vandalism is unacceptable,” Brown said. “Senator Collins and her staff will not be intimidated.”

Political Backdrop

Collins is seeking re-election for her sixth term, representing Maine, a state that leans Democratic. She faces a competitive challenge from Troy Jackson, the former Maine Senate president. This race is crucial for Democrats as they attempt to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. However, Jackson has not responded to inquiries regarding the vandalism incident.

Response and Criticism

Former Maine state Representative Austin Theriault, the 2024 Republican congressional nominee, emphasized the importance of condemning such actions regardless of political affiliation. “There shouldn’t be any hesitation to condemn these sort of actions, regardless of where you are on the political spectrum,” Theriault said.

Maine GOP Communications Director Kristina Parker described the vandalism as “another example of the radical left’s aggression” and emphasized the need for civil discourse. “We hope the prosecution is quick and smooth,” she added, underscoring that the political environment should not tolerate such behavior.

Additional Context

The location of Collins’ Biddeford office is significant as it is near the site of a fatal shooting by ICE agents in July. Following the incident, protesters demonstrated at her office due to her support for ICE funding. Collins, a moderate Republican, has garnered both praise and criticism during her campaign. She cast her 10,000th consecutive Senate vote this summer and has been scrutinized for her 2018 vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
