Paige Crowder, a 27-year-old mother from Indiana, shares her journey of raising her son Levi, who was born with Down syndrome in January 2025. Crowder aims to educate others about the realities of living with Down syndrome, debunking misconceptions she once had.

Crowder explained to Newsweek that Levi’s diagnosis during pregnancy shifted her understanding of Down syndrome. Like many, she held mistaken beliefs based on assumptions rather than firsthand experience. Being Levi’s mother transformed her perspective in unexpected ways.

Down syndrome, medically referred to as trisomy 21, is characterized by an extra copy of chromosome 21, leading to unique physical features, learning challenges, and behavioral differences. The Cleveland Clinic notes approximately 5,700 children in the U.S. are born with Down syndrome annually. While lifelong care requirements are common, many individuals lead active lives into adulthood when supported properly.

Crowder emphasizes Levi’s individuality beyond his diagnosis, highlighting his humor, affection, determination, and joyfulness. On her Instagram, @paigevictoriacrowder, Crowder recounted the moment she learned about Levi’s diagnosis and chose to embrace being his mother.

Through videos shared on her social media, Crowder showcases Levi’s interactions—laughing, vacationing, and joining family photos, illustrating everyday life with him. Her platform encourages viewing Levi as a child first, showcasing his personality, relationships, milestones, and defining moments.

She recalls her initial feelings of uncertainty and fear upon hearing the diagnosis, aiming to support mothers in similar positions to see past the diagnosis to their child’s potential.

Though Down syndrome is a lifelong condition, Cleveland Clinic outlines available treatments like physical and speech therapy, early educational interventions, glasses or hearing aids, and management of associated health conditions, which are crucial for the child’s growth and well-being.

Crowder describes her family’s life as typical but fulfilling, filled with milestones, routines, and occasional chaos. Levi’s needs do not overshadow their experiences but complement their family dynamic.
