Senator Fetterman Critiques Democratic Party’s Stance on Israel

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., voiced concerns at the Democratic Party’s direction regarding its stance on Israel. During the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, Fetterman stated the party’s ‘big tent’ now seems more welcoming to those who hold radical views about America than to staunch supporters of Israel.

Asked by CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett about leaving the Democratic Party, Fetterman said, “It’s easier to be included in that big tent to say ‘America deserved 9/11’ or America is ‘worse than Al-Qaeda’ than being very proud to stand on the side of Israel.” He noted a growing anti-Israel sentiment among caucus members.

The ‘America deserved 9/11’ remark referenced a comment made by streamer Hasan Piker in 2019. Despite retracting his statement, Piker’s rise in popularity signals a shift in political enthusiasm on the left, according to Fetterman.

Pew Research Center data shows 80% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents view Israel unfavorably, up from 53% in 2022. A significant partisan shift seems evident, with 60% of Americans overall unfavorably viewing Israel. Fetterman highlighted Senate votes on Israeli military assistance as evidence of this change.

Fetterman stated, “If America stops supporting Israel or turns their back on Israel, that must mean that we don’t even believe in ourselves anymore.” He considered leaving the party should it officially adopt an anti-Israel stance. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin defended Democrats as a ‘big tent’ party, distancing the DNC from Piker’s views.

In April, Senate Democrats attempted to block sales of military equipment to Israel. Fetterman referenced resolutions by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., involving a $295 million bulldozer sale and a $151.8 million bomb sale, separate from the Iron Dome funding he supported.
