Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts has successfully secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, according to The Associated Press. Markey’s victory comes despite a challenge from Rep. Seth Moulton, marking another win for the progressive faction this election cycle.
This result signifies a setback for those advocating for generational change and new leadership within the party. Recent primaries have seen younger Democratic candidates challenge older incumbents, often promoting progressive platforms.
Sen. Markey, who recently turned 80, has represented Massachusetts since 1976 and has emphasized his commitment to progressive ideals. He opposed President Trump’s defense budget, advocated for ‘Medicare for All,’ and supported increasing taxes on the wealthy. During his campaign, Markey asserted the importance of focusing on ideas rather than age.
Markey’s campaign gained momentum with support from prominent figures such as Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His supporters were influenced more by his progressive stance than concerns about his age.
During a debate hosted by WWLP, Markey voiced his opposition to the Trump administration’s actions undermining American families, stating, “This is the most energized I’ve ever been, fighting Donald Trump every single day.” His debate performances reflected his passion and commitments.
“You threw those trans kids under the bus,” Markey accused Moulton in an August debate, referring to comments Moulton made in 2024 on transgender issues.
Moulton apologized for his earlier comments and affirmed his support for LGBTQ rights during the debate. Markey’s campaign against Moulton echoed his earlier success against Rep. Joe Kennedy III in 2020, where Kennedy highlighted the need for younger representation.
Markey will compete against attorney John Deaton in November. Given Massachusetts’s political climate, Markey is heavily favored to win.
