Mayor Mamdani and President Trump Discuss Major Housing Project in NYC

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Trump met in New York City, marking the third meeting between the two, with a significant setting at Gracie Mansion. Their previous meetings took place at the White House, where Mamdani pitched a substantial housing initiative in Queens, dependent on federal aid. During the latest meeting, affordable housing and immigration were topics of discussion, albeit with limited specifics shared.

At a subsequent news conference, Mamdani elaborated on his proposal to construct the world’s largest rail deck over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard in Queens, aimed at creating 12,000 housing units. This ambitious project, initially suggested by former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration, also promises 30,000 jobs. Coordination between City Hall and the White House has been established to advance this discussion.

President Trump acknowledged the federal orientation of the Sunnyside Yards project, emphasizing the need for federal approvals and funding, while recognizing its advantageous location.

Carlo Scissura, involved in the original task force for Sunnyside Yards, praised the collaboration between the mayor and the president. He highlighted the project’s potential to revitalize the area with its expansive development, which spans over 200 acres.

Not everyone supports the development wholeheartedly. City Councilwoman Julie Won, in whose district the rail yard lies, expressed concern over the allocation of resources. She questioned whether priorities lie in immediate solutions to housing and healthcare crises rather than future developments.

The meeting coincided with the United Nations General Assembly week, where President Trump plans to address global issues, including the conflict with Iran, peace strategies for Gaza, and his administration’s proactive stance on international challenges. Strategic meetings with leaders from the UK, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine are scheduled, although a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not possible due to scheduling conflicts.
