GOP Candidates Call for Ending U.S. War in Iran Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Republican Senate candidates in Iowa and Michigan have urged the termination of the U.S. conflict in Iran, pointing to the impact on fuel prices in their states. Rep. Ashley Hinson from Iowa stated that residents should not bear the costs arising from the Iran war, affecting both fuel and groceries.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers from Michigan echoed these sentiments in a campaign advertisement. He emphasized that Michigan families are burdened by rising costs linked to the ongoing conflict and advocated for ending the war swiftly.

Hinson has proposed several measures to alleviate fuel costs. These include suspending the gas tax, pausing diesel exports, and reducing constraints on gas with higher ethanol blends. Additionally, she supports a diesel relief initiative to assist farmers and truckers impacted by high prices. She stressed the urgency of these actions to lower costs and advocated for ending the war immediately, emphasizing bipartisan collaboration.

Rogers, in his campaign ad, highlighted the struggle of Michiganders with increasing prices due to the conflict. He called for the suspension of the state and federal gas tax and a temporary halt on U.S. diesel exports until the conflict concludes. This increase in domestic supply aims to reduce diesel prices.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, a crucial passage for 20% of global oil exports, has driven fuel prices higher. As per AAA, current gas prices average $4.48, up $1.30 from the previous year, while diesel stands at $6.51 per gallon.

Sen. John Kennedy from Louisiana projected that the U.S. may exit the conflict in six months. He recognized the impact of the war on oil and fertilizer prices but noted success against Tehran, suggesting forthcoming economic respite for Americans.

The ongoing conflict prompts the U.S. State Department to caution Americans in the Middle East, citing a complex security environment. Meanwhile, Houthi rebels in Yemen have assured the Trump administration they will not target U.S. ships in the Red Sea despite increased tensions.
