Maryland Parents Arrested After Infant’s Death with Severe Injuries

A couple from Maryland faces serious charges following the death of their 2-month-old daughter, who suffered from significant head injuries. Charging documents and prosecutors report that the father claimed the injuries were caused by ‘Satan slamming a door on the child.’

Details of the Charges

Oscar Pineda and Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, both 21, have been charged with first and second-degree child abuse, first and second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment. These charges could result in a maximum sentence of 55 years in prison. Baltimore Police stated that additional homicide charges may follow, pending the autopsy report on the infant, Aida Mikea Monzon Alvarado.

Incident Overview

The baby was admitted to Harbor Hospital on Wednesday. Doctors identified ‘suspicious’ severe bruising around her eyes and jawline. Further examination revealed ‘significant head and brain trauma’ alongside multiple skull fractures, as noted in the charging documents.

Both parents initially provided differing explanations for the injuries. The father attributed them to a supernatural force, while the mother mentioned a fall from the bed due to her 2-year-old son jumping on it. However, prosecutors argued that such a fall could not account for the extent of the injuries.

Investigative Findings

Medical examination indicated the baby endured major head and brain trauma, including frontal lobe hemorrhaging and a subdural hemorrhage. Upon arrival at the hospital, the infant was unresponsive and hospital staff could not revive her.

The mother reported to investigators that she had noticed the bruises on September 6, and by the following day, the infant began vomiting. Medical help was not sought until the infant was unresponsive on Wednesday.

Legal Proceedings

Prosecutors stressed that both parents, who are Guatemalan nationals, pose a significant flight risk. Consequently, the court ordered both to be held without bail.
