NATO Fighter Jets Shoot Down Drone in Lithuania Amid Rising Tensions

6 days ago 0

NATO fighter jets intercepted and destroyed a drone that breached Lithuania’s airspace on Tuesday morning. The incident was confirmed by the Lithuanian president.

The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) reportedly entered Lithuania from Belarus, a key ally of Russia. It flew over the area of Lentvaris, close to Vilnius, the capital, before NATO jets took it down near Kaunas.

With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region, said Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda. Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace.

Lithuanian authorities highlighted the significance of maintaining aerial vigilance, particularly as tensions in the region escalate.

The incident follows concerns among NATO’s eastern flank nations over the potential spillover of the Ukraine conflict into their territories. These fears have been underscored by previous intrusions, such as last week’s suspected Russian Shahed-type drone in Romanian airspace.

Newsweek has reached out to the Russian defense ministry for a response on this matter.

This situation remains fluid, with further updates anticipated.
