California Governor Gavin Newsom has stated he will refrain from running for president if Kamala Harris decides to enter the race. In a conversation with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Newsom expressed his intention to step aside should the former Vice President run, saying, “I wouldn’t run if she ran.” When Tapper seemed surprised, Newsom clarified that he wouldn’t want to engage in a competitive scenario that detracts from the focus on the election.
The interview carried out while fly-fishing in Montana, revealed Newsom’s perspective on Democratic competition. He pointed out that Harris’s previous bids could be seen as reason for others to step up, yet acknowledged his respect for Harris’s supporters and potential voter base, saying, “The Venn diagram on that is just pure crossover.”
Despite speculations about Newsom’s candidacy for 2028, Harris possesses a significant lead over him among Democratic hopefuls, holding a 24.5-13.5% advantage according to the RealClearPolitics polls. Other potential candidates like Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Jon Ossoff follow closely.
Current betting odds from Polymarket place Ocasio-Cortez in the lead, but Newsom is seen as trailing with 12.7%, while Harris follows at 8%. This provides insight into the dynamic field ahead of the 2028 elections.
