Steve Lotysz’s Journey from Aspirations to Acclaimed Artist

In the past, Steve Lotysz, an artist and former dentist from Frankfort, dreamt of breaking through the gates of Medinah Country Club to showcase his artistic talent. Known in the golfing world as Steve Lotus, Lotysz often passed by Medinah with hopes of capturing its beauty through his art. “I used to drive by Medinah when I was an artist and a golfer and I would look through the gates and say, you know, I have to try it someday,” he recalled. His dream materialized, leading him to be commissioned to create artwork for prestigious events like the Presidents Cup, which commenced this week at Medinah’s Course No. 3.

Lotysz’s Artistic Contributions and Meetings

This event marks his fourth time being invited to Medinah, where he meets attendees and sells prints of his artwork. The Presidents Cup features teams captained by Brandt Snedeker for the USA and Geoff Ogilvy for the International squad, with players like Scottie Scheffler and Adam Scott participating. The biennial competition has seen the United States dominate with a record of 13-1-1.

A Rich History of Artistic Endeavors

Lotysz’s artistic journey is notable, having painted at events like the 1999 and 2006 PGA Championships won by Tiger Woods, and the memorable 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. In 2026, Lotysz expanded his portfolio with works for the PGA Championship near Philadelphia and the Open Championship in England, celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary with his wife, Sue. Sue plays a crucial role in handling administrative tasks as Lotysz has been commissioned for 56 events since his debut at the 1997 U.S. Senior Open at Olympia Field Country Club.

The Unique Perspective of a Golfer and Artist

Lotysz believes his dual affinity for golf and art sets him apart. “Some golf artists are not golfers,” he notes, but as a golfer, he feels he adds depth to his paintings. His artistic process is intertwined with his spiritual beliefs, reflected in the Christian fish symbol in his signature. “Sometimes things happen in the painting process that I can’t explain,” he shares.

Looking Forward and Maintaining Gratitude

While Lotysz hasn’t set a specific target for commissions before retiring, he remains committed to future projects, including the 2027 PGA Championships in Texas and the Open Championship in Scotland. “As long as I do what I do and do it well, people are happy with my work,” he states.

Through his journey, Lotysz cherishes the relationships formed with those who appreciate his work, reiterating how “blessed” he feels to continue practicing his craft.
