A Family Finds Closure 25 Years After 9/11

Barbara Keating, pictured alongside her husband William, tragically lost her life during the 9/11 attacks while aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which crashed into the World Trade Center’s north tower. Last year, forensic researchers were able to identify her remains, and on Friday, she will finally be laid to rest.

As the United States marks 25 years since 9/11, Barbara Keating’s family plans a private memorial in Framingham, Massachusetts. Keating was returning to California after visiting family when she became one of the victims of the terrorist hijacking of Flight 11.

Paul Keating, Barbara’s son, shared with NPR the importance of this moment for the family. He expressed that laying her to rest at last brings a sense of closure. Reflecting on the attack, Paul recalled seeing the destruction of the twin towers from New Jersey, only to later learn it was his mother’s plane that had been hijacked.

Barbara Keating, aged 72 at the time of her passing, was a beloved mother to five, grandmother to twelve, and had been an active leader in the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization in Boston. She will be buried beside her husband, fulfilling a long-awaited family wish.

Despite the passage of time, New York City officials report that 40% of the victims from the 9/11 attacks remain missing or unidentified. Search teams tirelessly sift through the remnants of the World Trade Center, endeavoring to bring solace to affected families.

Paul Keating praised the tireless work of those committed to recovering remains for grieving families. He highlighted the effort involved in meticulously searching through miles of debris for nearly a quarter of a century.

Dr. Jason Graham, New York City’s chief medical examiner, emphasized the city’s commitment to identifying the victims of 9/11, stating it as a ‘sacred’ endeavor. Over the years, advanced forensic DNA techniques have enabled the identification of previously unknown victims, including a woman identified last month whose family has opted for privacy.
