Mullin Warns of Terrorist and Cartel Alliances Against the US

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin discussed federal strategies during an appearance on ‘The Sunday Briefing’. He highlighted challenges from Mexican cartel alliances, evolving drone threats, foreign cyber threats, and called attention to progressive lawmakers advocating for reduced funding of border enforcement agencies. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is updating its seal to signify its constant battle against threats. The new seal will have the eagle facing the arrows, reflecting a focus on defense rather than peace.

Symbolic Change in DHS Seal

Mullin explained the change in the seal design ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. The seal’s eagle, which once faced a palm leaf symbolizing peace, will now face arrows to indicate a state of perpetual warfare against threats. The seal also showcases DHS’s components: air, land, and sea. Twenty-two stars signify the entities that merged to form the department.

Increasing Threats to Homeland

The Secretary marked terrorism as the main threat but noted its evolving nature. Terrorists are reportedly joining forces with Mexican cartels, with fentanyl overdoses causing more fatalities than the Vietnam War. Mullin praised former President Donald Trump for addressing these cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Emergence of Drone Threats

Drones pose new security challenges as they can be easily acquired and used for attacks. Efforts to protect sensitive locations with fences and armed guards are now complemented by measures against aerial threats.

Political Climate and Safety

As campaign season approaches, political candidates face increasing risks. Mullin urged for tolerance in differing opinions to avoid violence, reinforcing Homeland Security’s commitment to preventing such acts.

Counters to Cyber Threats

Mullin identified major cyber threats from actors linked to Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia. These cyberattacks are frequent, necessitating constant vigilance and adaptation.

He stressed the importance of agility, stating, “Every day presents new threats.” The DHS’s approach involves quick responses across cyber, sea, air, and land dimensions.
