An Amazon cargo plane crashed at Miami International Airport on Sunday, resulting in an active emergency response. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Prime Air Flight 7598 overran the runway and landed around 2 p.m. ET after departing from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Local fire officials have reported “multiple patients” at the crash site, although it remains unclear if there were any fatalities. Social media footage showed the Boeing 767 with its tail over the airport’s fence, emitting thick black smoke.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is actively working on the scene, describing it as an ongoing incident. They have deployed over 60 units to extinguish the fire and handle the situation.
The FAA confirmed the investigation is underway to determine the causes behind the crash.
The Miami-Dade Aviation Department issued a statement announcing the closure of all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport as of 3 p.m. ET. A ground stop was initiated to allow first responders to secure the area, initially planned until 3 p.m. but later extended to 5:30 p.m.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned travelers of significant delays and potential flight cancellations due to the incident.
The cargo plane was being operated by 21 Air, a contract carrier for Amazon. Amazon’s spokesperson, Kelly Nantel, stated that their priority remains the safety and well-being of everyone involved. The company is coordinating with local authorities to obtain more information and provide support to those affected.
