Williams Sisters’ Return to US Open Ends in Thriller

After a four-year hiatus, Venus and Serena Williams made a triumphant return to the US Open court on Friday night in Queens. The iconic duo had initially planned to reunite at Wimbledon earlier this year. However, Serena, now 44 and returning after an extended break, had to withdraw due to injury.

On Friday, the sisters were met with roaring applause as they stepped onto Arthur Ashe Stadium’s court. Serena sported a jacket emblazoned with her US Open victories, including doubles titles won alongside Venus in 1999 and 2009.

The Williams sisters faced off against Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Australian Maya Joint, who is just 20. Remarkably, Maya was still a toddler when Venus and Serena clinched their 2009 US Open victory.

The match began with a competitive first set, where Chan and Joint pulled ahead, securing a 6-3 win. The Williams sisters fought back in the second set, pushing it to a decisive seven-point tie-breaker. Although they had several chances to close out the set, Chan and Joint resisted fiercely. Ultimately, Venus and Serena clinched the set, prolonging the match.

The crowd’s support for the Williams duo was evident, with cheers after every point. Despite the formidable challenge from Chan and Joint, who were in only their fourth event together, the Williams sisters held their ground, taking the match to a final tie-breaker.

In the thrilling finale, Venus and Serena initially took five consecutive points, establishing an early lead. Yet, Chan and Joint demonstrated resilience, reclaiming the lead and eventually winning the match. Spanning over three hours, the encounter concluded with scores of 6–3, 6–7(6), and 7–6(10) in favor of Chan and Joint.

Though the outcome was not in their favor, the Williams sisters’ performance reinforced their stature as enduring legends in the sport.
