A superyacht of mysterious origins recently appeared in a Los Angeles marina. Its identity was quickly unveiled by locals. According to the California Post, the yacht belongs to J.K. Rowling, the author of the ‘Harry Potter’ series.
Superyacht’s Disguise
Docked at Marina del Rey since Sunday, the yacht had its name concealed. However, this did not prevent the vessel’s identity from becoming known. The California Post referred to it as ‘the worst-kept secret on the Marina.’ Despite efforts to keep the yacht’s name covered, it quickly became identified through the Instagram account twogirls.oneboat. Commenters recognized it as Rowling’s yacht, Samsara.
Identity and Value
The Samsara, reportedly worth $150 million, was built in 2015 by Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco and originally named Infinity. It first belonged to businessman Eric Smidt and then to Australian billionaire Brett Blundy before Rowling acquired it in 2023. Sources suggest covering the name deterred protesters against Rowling’s views.
“Quite often, you’ll find that if a boat is at anchor or in a port you might switch off AIS [Automatic Identification System], so people can’t instantly work out where you are,” said yacht broker Chris Cecil-Wright.
J.K. Rowling remains unspotted on the vessel since its docking.
Features and Privacy
The 290-foot ship, akin to the length of a football field, offers luxury amenities such as a cinema, beach club, and circular swimming pool. It accommodates 12 guests and a crew of 26. The ship’s annual running costs could reach $15 million. Cecil-Wright commented on privacy being a significant advantage for such yacht owners, offering them relaxation away from public eye.
Rowling’s Wealth
Starting as a single mother on government aid, Rowling’s success with ‘Harry Potter’ stories elevated her to wealth, with Forbes estimating her net worth at $1.2 billion as of September 4. Superyachts like the Samsara provide a luxurious, mobile retreat for the wealthiest, likened to isolated islands.
Luxury Travel Trend
Fox News Digital earlier reported on luxury hotel brands entering the sea travel market, introducing intimate superyachts for affluent travelers who usually avoid populous cruise ships.
