China’s Zeekr Factory Paves Way for Future of Electric Vehicles

On the outskirts of Ningbo, China, a factory surrounded by green hills and giant wind turbines is aiming to redefine the automotive industry. This is where Geely Auto Group produces Zeekr, its luxury brand that targets the younger generation. The brand name combines ‘Zee’ for Generation Z and ‘Kr’ from Krypton.

The factory’s operations began in 2023 and boasts advanced automation, with 99% of the production process controlled by artificial intelligence. This highly automated environment requires minimal human intervention as mechanical arms join forces to assemble vehicles.

Zhao Chunlin, Vice President of manufacturing at Zeekr and former General Motors employee, believes the demand for high-quality products in China has placed the country at the forefront of the electric vehicle (EV) industry. He points out that Chinese consumers’ high standards have driven manufacturers to achieve excellence.

Zhao remarked on the difference in quality between Chinese and American-made vehicles, confidently stating that Chinese-made Tesla vehicles offer superior quality.

Zeekr plans to enter the North American market. A recent trade agreement between Canada and China will allow 49,000 Chinese EVs to be sold in the first year, drastically reducing tariffs from 100% to 6%. This is expected to capture a significant portion of the Canadian EV market. Chinese vehicles typically offer lower prices, and their increasing presence in markets like Australia and Europe indicates a growing influence.

While U.S. automakers have geographical advantages in Canada, Chinese vehicles’ expanding market share could signal future shifts. However, the U.S. government currently blocks Chinese vehicles with tariffs, citing national security and protecting domestic industry. Despite this, Zhao believes collaboration and joint ventures will eventually bring Chinese vehicles to the American market.

In a demonstration of their technological prowess, CBS News test-drove Zeekr’s 9X plug-in hybrid, described as ‘China’s Rolls Royce.’ The vehicle features luxury elements such as leather interiors and a Naim Audio sound system. It also boasts impressive specifications, reaching 0-100 km/h in four seconds and offering a range of 745 miles. The car’s self-parking feature and competitive pricing offer strong advantages over existing models like the Cadillac Escalade.

Within a decade, Chinese cars have transformed from underappreciated to highly regarded across Western markets. Zeekr now exports to over 50 countries, continuing its expansion into Europe and the Middle East.
